Back and better than never!

Well, it seems like a few months have passed since Ive last been on here. A LOT has gone on, way too much to even attempt to catch up. That being said, it should be noted that I got engaged over the summer, and I am no longer taking calls from Jennifer (Aniston) and Debra (Messing), sorry gals. :-) I uploaded some pictures from my myrtle beach trip with Corrine from July. Take a peak. I hope to get back to writing a little more frequently, as I have time. To those participating in the Thanksgiving Day Bowl, get ready for another muddy event like last year. But hey, Ill have new gloves, so damn it, give me the ball! A very happy Thanksgiving to all my faithful readers (and if you are still looking at this after almost a year of inactivity, you must be DAMN faithful)! HA!

Snow

Looks like there is a good chance of snow moving into the area Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning. Discuss!

My Apologies

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to anyone who reads this blog.  Apparently, I do not provide enough fluff content in which the reader can respond to without using so much as a quarter of their brain power.  More importantly. many of my posts require the responder to have an opinion in which they have to defend.  That can be very scary for the average individual.  Therefore, I will do my best to write about safe things like the weather, TV, and anything else I can think of that will allow the reader to hide entirely behind his or her pseudonym.  I would not want any of you to have an opinion on anything, and worse yet, take the time to put your thoughts into words.

Easy Way Out

Following the President's State of the Union Address, I have been listening to the cries of liberal after liberal saying how much they hate the war. Guess what, I support the war, and yet I hate it too. And while I fully expected this war to last longer than a couple of years, I had hoped by this time that more control would be in the Iraqi's hands.  I am in full agreement that a new plan, needed to be implemented and it should consist of ideas from both parties as well as the military and intelligence agencies. Therefore, if the President took these measures, and is now attempting to initiate a new plan, I am supportive of him.  For all those that do not feel this way, which by poll, there are many of you, I ask you to explain what your plan would be. Take into consideration that pulling out of Iraq at this point, would leave Iraq in a similar state to Afghanistan in the late 80's. As we all know, Afghanistan flourished as Terrorville in the 90's and was responsible for quite a few attacks on the US and Western World.  Also take into consideration that a central power against the US may be established between Iraq, Iran, Sierra, etc... with our power diminished.  It seems easy to say, bloodshed is bad, war is bad, lets get out and everything will be fine.  I question the integrity of each and every politician whose position is pull out, yet has no plan in front of them.  A true leader does not change with the wind.

For each of you that I know is against the war and does not respond, I will simply chalk it up to a snapshot of your own integrity.

Hillarycare

With the announcement of Hillary's presidential campaign, comes the promise of "Hillarycare", a wonderful government founded and run healthcare program. Now I know there are a lot of you fun loving liberals out there, just waiting to get your hands on a juicy government program like that. But personally, I think its hogwash.  The poorest of poor already have government health care.  The oldest of old have healthcare. Most Americans over the age of 30 have some type of healthcare coverage. Who doesnt have coverage? Young adults in early stages of their career.  Not a perfect setup, but not that bad. Why should the government be able to go and tell a doctor how much he can charge for a service?  Id be damned if after 12 years of additional schooling I was going to have my wage determined by the government.  Furthermore, do you think for one minute that our drug companies would be nearly as dilligent in developing treatment if not for the almighty dollar? The goverment is already involved as much as it need be in healthcare. It provides for cases of absolute need. The last thing I want is another huge socialistic program.  If you want crappy public health care, head over to Europe. Im sure you will love your stay.

Garcia vs McNabb

Cmon, celebrity deatchmatch style! Lets see it. I saw that Andy Reid canceled a press conference McNabb had scheduled today, to update everyone on his status.  I'm guessing he probably did not want to give the media the chance to expand on the Garcia or McNabb debate which has been gaining steam over the past month or so. I'm sure MOST Eagles fans (now that they are out of the playoffs) will go back to being McNabb stumpers over the next couple months.  And realistically, he is a pretty good quarterback, right?

That's just it, he is "PRETTY GOOD". He throws a nice long ball, and he is a moderate short to mid passer.  He used to be able to scramble, but when he did that, he was not as accurate with his throws. Now he is older, prone to injury, and not nearly as much of a threat to run.  His lifetime stats are good, but so are the stats of most of the starting QBs I looked up. That's why stats do not hold a lot of weight with me.

I do not necessarily think that Garcia is the answer for the Eagles either.  He has always been good, and I believe for a West Coast offense, he is at least as good as McNabb.  However, he is 36 and cannot have too many more years left in the tank. The mere fact that he could hop right in, and be good enough to lead the Eagles to the playoffs has to make you wonder a bit.

Here is what I have come up with: The Eagles success over the past 6 years has very little to do with the McNabb.

When I think of what made me, as a Giants fan, not want to play the Eagles, it was always their defense.  Jim Johnson's blitz schemes are just a pain in the ass to deal with.  For most of their successful campaigns, they have had a healthy ferocious defense.  That I always fear a little bit.  During McNabb's first year or two, his running worried me a bit. It does not anymore.  For one, his injuries have slowed him somewhat. Secondly, it only leads to injury, and if you watch him in the warmer climates, he exhausts himself.  As a passer, he is a little better than average.  I would not bench the guy by any means, but I would never pay him All Star numbers.  He is inaccurate, he makes frequent poor decisions, and just is not someone you put in the same class as Manning, Brady, Brees, etc.

The bottom line: The Eagles could place any accurate short to mid passer in the QB position, and contend providing they have a strong, healthy defense. McNabb, Feeley, and Garcia have all taken the Eagles into the playoffs. Feeley and Garcia had far lesser contracts, but the results were the same.  Maybe Limbaugh was right, maybe the media does want to jump on the bandwagon of every black QB in the league. McNabb, Culpepper, and Vick seem to always get hyped up and underperform.  I don't think Garcia (in his past), Manning (Eli), Grossman, get the same benefit.  None of this matters because the Eagles are so deep into McNabb, he IS the franchise. I just don't know that he will ever be good enough to TRULY make a difference in a big time playoff game, which is what the Eagles need if they ever want to win a Super Bowl.

Course as a Giants fan, I don't want them to do that anyways!

Up is Down, Down is up

If you are not watching Boston Legal, there is something wrong with you. You obviously just do not GET IT. Maybe your brain cannot handle the superior mix of comedy, sarcasm, drama, and political commentary.  Seriously, I watch very little non sports TV. If I have the tube on, its usually on ESPN or one of the major networks showing Football or Baseball. I cannot be bothered to tune into TV shows each night, and my cable connection is weak so digital recordings look like shit. However, I make time every Tuesday at 10:00 to watch Boston Legal (ABC). There simply is not another show like it.  It truly is thought provoking, and yet you are still left fully entertained.

I could rant and rave about individual characters, particularly my two favorites, Denny Crane and Alan Shore, played by William Shatner and James Spader respectively. However, this entry would run on forever till I went through the all star cast. If you have not seen an episode, you have to watch.  Give it a couple weeks to get acquainted with, I promise you will not be disappointed.  Shout out for Tom's early recommendation, he has watched every episode from the beginning. I watched a handful the first year, and nearly all of the last two seasons. Course with my DVD sets I can go back and see the first season now as well. :-)

New Year

Sup everybody!

Long time, no write. My bad, what can I say. December and early January have been pretty darn busy in every aspect.  Its always that way, the holidays go by before you even realize that they are there.  This year I made it even more stressful by looking at a home fairly seriously, before not purchasing it.  So not that I owe too many of you an appolgy as I don't receive many responses on here, but sorry for the layoff.... NOW IM BACK! :-)

Good Ol Philly Fans!

Anybody else watch the Philly crowd boo Jeff Garcia on Monday night? Apparently throwing for three touchdowns and over 300 yds wasn't enough for the Eagles crowd.  After taking a fierce hit early in the 4th quarter, the Eagles began to warm up AJ Feeley.  Instead of cheering for Garcia when he managed to stand back up and continue to play, they booed.  All of this while Garcia was leading the team to an important victory.  What else can you expect from the city that boos Santa Claus?

BCS Controversy

While USC's loss to UCLA on Saturday was stunning, no one can be surprised that the bowl picture is once again being debated.  My reaction? Thats ok! The debate is part of what makes college football truly special. What other sport causes so much debate? As much as a playoff system sounds wonderful, it would never work correctly. You have over 100 teams, there are bound to be many with the same record.  You also have strong and weak conferences, so just because you win a conference, does not necessarily mean your team would do well against another conference's fifth seed (insert shameless BIG EAST put down)  Why can't we all be happy that we have a system that uses several polls, as well as a computerized component to at least put SOME of the best in the country in the top bowl games? Much like a democracy is not perfect, but is the best form of government available, the BCS is the best imperfect system we have.

As for the national championship game, Im disappointed.  Im sure Florida will do ok, but I think USC would have been a much better match.  While Michigan might have been a better team than both, I dont think they would have beaten Ohio State, so I was rooting for them to get the Rose Bowl bid, and hopefully help the BIG TEN kick some BCS ass. Nothing against Florida, they are a decent team, but USC is way more exciting to watch, and would probably put some decent points up on a very good OSU defense.  Im not feeling that Chris Leak and the boys will be able to do too much of that.

Regardless, I cant wait for bowl week! I can only hope that Penn State finds an offense by the 11:00am kickoff in the Outback Bowl :-)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well once again the year has flown by and we have arrived at one of it's best holidays.  I love Thanksgiving and all the traditions that surround it.  Where Christmas is surrounded by so much commercialization,  Thanksgiving is a simple time to celebrate family and friends, all while having a great meal.  And as I sit here awaiting my first bite of Turkey, I am reminded at how lucky I am to have grown up in such a close family, to have met a girl I love very much and whose family shares many of the same values, and to be surrounded by a great bunch of friends. We all have minor health issues and none of our lives are absolutely perfect, but you know what? They are pretty darn good.

I am happy to be healthy and to have all of you around me.  I'm thankful for the life I have been given and all of the things I have been blessed with.  I think that day in and day out, life can become monotonous.  We tend to focus on one given shortcoming, and not the big picture.  After all, it is so easy to become distracted in this hectic world.  Today is a day of focus on those things that truly do matter.... our loved ones, family, friends, and our health.  I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday.

Bob Knight got it Right!

I cannot say that I have supported everything Bob Knight has ever done as a coach. However, the most recent instance where he "tapped" a player in the jaw who was not looking at him when he was being reprimanded has been completely blown out of proportion.  Im not sure how or why we got to be such pussies, but as far as Im concerned its a bunch of bologna.

Physical discipline has worked for thousands of years, and now all of a sudden in the last 20 years, authoritarians can only say "now dont do that, its not nice?" I do not understand this at all. Quite frankly, although I turned out to be a pretty good adult overall, I think I probably should have been smacked a few times in my childhood and put in my place.  I think I would have respected authority more than I did as I grew up.

There is a big difference between beating a kid or physically reprimanding him.  Physical discipline is a consequence, and if done correctly, rarely has to be used. I do not advocate coaches, teachers, etc laying a beat down on misbehaving or disrespectful kids.  I do think that some ability, whether its a smack on the hand, or an open handed tap to the jaw can be a very powerful and worthwhile manner of disciplining.  There is no doubt in these occurences who the authoritarian is.  Kids need to learn as they grow up that freedom is a priveledge, not a license. You cannot just do what you please whenever you please.

If parents did more of this at home, then maybe there would be less needed in our schools. Yet since the media has taken away that right in the school systems, and now apparently from college coaches, its no wonder that there is a distinct lack of respect within our society.  More kids need to be put in their place when they are young and impressionable, so that they have a respect for authority and the law. It may sound harsh to some, but if not done in abusive fashion, it can be very effective in achieving a respectful, cohesive unit.  The majority of those who have worked with Bob Knight firmly believe him to be a wondeful coach and great role model for the students he has coached.  Im sure that on occaision he has crossed the line a bit, but Im sick of the liberal media, calling for his ouster and blowing things totally out of proportion.

Let bring back town hangings too.....! :-)

Injury Costs Red Team Possible Comeback

It was a gorgeous Sunday in the Valley... You know, gray skies and light rain all day, the kind of weather that really makes your weekend.  That did not stop the UTFL from playing its weekly football game early Sunday morning. One participant even drove 50 miles back from his "weekend home" to play in the game. And what a game it was!

As usual, Tom and Old Mike went through the process of picking teams.  Also, as usual, Red team consisted of Tom, the Fillman's, and Russ versus the Blue team of Old Mike, Sam, Young Mike, Berg, and Rock. Everyone was timely, well, except for Russ who was fashionably late and arrived at Halftime. One can only hope he was at home practicing his Halo 2!

The game  was back and forth, mostly dominated by offense.  Red ran a lot of bump coverage, which slowed down some of the long bombs that Old Mike likes to air out.  NOTE: Berg should have laid off the "bombs" the night before, I think we all shudder at the thought.... In any case, Red turned the ball over too many times, and fell behind towards the end of the game.

During what turned out to be the final drive of the game, Red was making every effort to tie the score. After driving up the field to roughly the 30 yard line, Blue blitzed Tom on third down. Tom was ready to jet into the end zone. The only problem was, his hamstring was not!  Tom made it about 5 yards before he started yelling "oh F**K, oh F**K", and the play ended.  Team doctors examined his injury on Monday, and currently he is listed as questionable for the Thanksgiving day game with a pulled hammie.

Red team put in backup QB Russ for the final play of the game. Robb caught a perfect pass at about the 3 yard line.  At this point Sam went for the ball, and replay shows that Robb scored to tie the game.  However, at the time of the play, Blue team announced that Robb was tagged and the game ended without official's review. I know if Red would have had a red flag, we certainly would have challenged the ending.

We'll have coverage of all the upcoming games including the great big THANKSGIVING DAY BOWL right here on Jonnie on the Spot!

Seeing Red

By the way, this site is NOT pink. Its freekin RED ok? so get it RIGHT!

Wow, that buzzing isnt that annoying after all!

In the upcoming days I will have much to say about the election. I am curious as to everyone's thoughts, even the most liberal one's who would liquidate wal-mart in order to provide the entire world with a tooth brush and a copy of Bill Clinton's "My Life" book.

Ah, but this entry has nothing to do with the election, so sit back, and enjoy.

About a month ago, I was searching around the good ol AM stations in my Avalanche, looking for a sports game. I dont remember whether it was playoff baseball, NCAA football, NFL... I just know I was driving and not by the TV, and damn it I wanted to know the score! I stumbled upon ESPN Radio.  I had occaisionally listened before, but never that intently.  I decided that when I went to work on Monday, I was going to either listen to it online or by radio while I worked.  After all, October is a kick ass month for sports...Post season baseball, Rivalry college football, and the middle of the NFL season.

Well, lets just say I have become a bit of an addict.  Mike & Mike in the morning (also broadcast on ESPN 2 on Cable) are hillarious.  The Herd with Collin Cowherd takes opinionated sports comedy a step further. Collin likes to talk about just about anything on his show, and can be explosive with disagreeable callers. Then Dan Patrick's show follows in the afternoon, joined daily halfway through the show by Keith Olbermann with the "BIG SHOW".  Each show will tend to go over the same current issues in sports from last nights games.  However, each show handles the stories differently, and sometimes opinions can widely vary. All three shows have good guests on, with Dan Patrick probably drawing the best overall.

Now, I cant imagine I will listen to this stuff all day forever, but I must say, it makes the day fly by. These guys are all amusing, and pretty inciteful. There also is a quality to talk radio that does not exist on television.  I think many TV personalities would struggle to be entertaining on the radio, you really have to know your stuff to keep someone's interest without any visuals. I think I may branch out to politics and try to listen to moderate republican Sean Hannity's show as well, once football season is over and theres no reason to pay attention to anything until spring training. :-)

In any case, if you have never listened to ESPN radio, I urge you to give it a shot.  In our area it is AM 1320, or in Easton 1230.  It can also be streamed online for free at ESPNradio.com.  Let me know what you think! Also, for anyone interested in Sean Hannity's show, www.hannity.com streams it at 3:00. He is also on the radio, but I dont remember the affiliate.

Unbiased Journalism?

Just a quick thought as I watch the election results roll in... It seems that the entire cast of analysts on MSNBC are pro democrat.  Then I flip one channel higher, and I get to listen to the Fox News, also known as the Fox Republican Channel.  Not to say that they come right out and say it, but both stations appear fairly party biased.  Anybody else agree?

Divine Intervention

Ive gotten into several arguments lately with people who believe smoking should be outlawed in any place open to the public such as restaurants, bars, and.... well thats about the only two places you can still smoke in public.  I guess I should preface this discussion with the fact that I hate smoking, have never smoked in my life, and despise smelling of it when I leave an establishment.  I completely support banning smoking in any publicly funded area.

However, I do not believe that the government should tell private enterprise whether they can allow smoking on their property or not. As long as the act of smoking is legal, a business owner ought to be able to permit or deny it based on his own judgement.  Lets be honest, while spending a lifetime in the same room with a chain smoker might lead to some degradation in your health, you are not going to die from breathing some second hand smoke occaisionally in a restaurant.  If you don't want to breath the smoke, go to a non smoking restaurant.  Its your choice whether you go into the smoking permitted establishment, no one is forcing you to go there.

I find it funny that we are so quick to enlist the government's help to insure the "safety" of our health from smoking.  Roughly 30% of Americans smoke, but the majority is ready to tell the government to restrict smoking to at most the smoker's home.  The right of a private business owner to choose whether to allow the LEGAL act would be stripped, and we could become one step closer to a society where only the norms are permitted.  Seems to me that many people object to the government's screening of certain bank and phone records to protect our national safety. (These screenings are only permitted for national security issues and cannot be used for any other type of criminal conduct. ) "I DONT WANT THE GOVERNMENT INFRINGING ON MY PERSONAL LIFE" they say.   And for all of the opposition I have heard from folks, I dont know ONE person that the screenings have affected in a known negative fashion, certainly not 30% of the population.

So Im not sure which way people want it.  Do you want Big Brother making all your decisions for you?  Do you want to walk through life with your own personal set of training wheels cause you do well on the straight aways, but struggle with the curves? For God sakes people, take some responsibility for yourselves.  Stop blaming the world for everything, and be responsible for your own decisions. Its one thing if the neighboring refinery dumps pollutants unknowingly into your drinking water.  Its another if you choose to eat in a smoking establishment.  While I hate leaving with my clothes smelling like an ashtray,  I dont hate it enough to impose my lifestyle on someone else. I made the choice to walk through the door.
